The Italian word Amici translated to English means ‘Friends’ and what an appropriate name for this welcoming, wonderful restaurant!
Located on St. Peters Street in Bedford you will find Amici, offering delicious Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. Warmly welcomed as soon as we stepped through the door we were quickly seated at our table. The restaurant has a warm, cosy feel and Gabriella (front of house) made us feel welcome immediately.
We had to ask for more time to decide what we wanted to order as there is a huge variety of dishes and wine on menus including, seafood, pastas, risottos, salads, sharing platters and a range of meat dishes including steak. Everything is made fresh and has gluten free options including the calamari and pasta so there is something for everyone. Amici also offer a set lunchtime menu during the week (2 courses for £10) You can view their menus here.
We eventually decided on our starters; Gamberoni al vino bianco (Pan fried tiger prawns in white wine and garlic butter sauce cooked with fresh chopped tomatoes, basil and crushed chilli) and the Calamari fritti (Freshly cooked squid rings coated in flour and deep fried).
Both dishes came with large fresh salads. The pan fried tiger prawns were full of flavour and I especially enjoyed the fresh taste of the tomatoes and garlic with a hint of chilli. The calamari was tender with just the right amount of crispiness from the flour.
The service from Gabriella and the owner, Halil was second to none. Halil kindly showed me round the whole restaurant, through a party room/extra restaurant area to the outdoor garden and secret, fully stocked cocktail bar that I will be trying out when the weather is a little warmer!
We stuck to the seafood theme for our mains and had the Linguini alla marinara (linguini pasta cooked in fresh tomato sauce with prawns, mussels and squid rings) and the Seafood Trilogy from the Amici Specials section of the menu (pasta parcels filled with spinach and ricotta cheese with king prawns, calamari and salmon in a creamy white wine sauce with fresh herbs).
The tomato sauce was refreshing and complimented the perfectly cooked seafood which is fresh from the local fishmonger on Newnham Street. The linguini was al dente of course as there is nothing worse than over-cooked pasta! The Seafood trilogy sauce was bursting with rich, creamy flavours (I would highly recommend trying this) and the portions were all very generous.
After our incredible starters and mains you’d think we wouldn’t have room for dessert, but you’d be mistaken. We ordered profiteroles and tiramisu and we were in chocolaty, creamy, heaven. A perfect end to a perfect meal.
I would definitely recommend visiting Amici if you’re a fan of high quality, tasty, Italian food and impeccable service. Thank you for having us, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!
