My sister-in-law and I had the pleasure of dining at Riobello Italian Restaurant in Bedford last week, located a 2 minute walk from Bedford Embankment.
We were welcomed by the extremely friendly owner Giovanni Orlandi and I was immediately impressed by the décor which has greatly improved since the last time I was there (which was quite a few years ago.) The walls have been painted a light grey which is a nice contrast to the red tables, chairs and it was lovely to see white and red checked table cloths you would imagine to be in a typical restaurant in Italy. There is even a wall featuring a beautiful mural painted by Giovanni’s talented wife Amanda of the iconic Sophia Loren.
We were seated and ordered a bottle of Prosecco with our starters, I went for the Calamari Fritti (Lightly battered squid served on baby leaf salad with a citrus and aioli) and my sister-in-law ordered the Malanzane Parmigiana (Aubergines and parmesan, mozerella layers with a tomato sauce baked in the oven)
Both starters were presented beautifully. The calamari was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside was served with fresh little tomatoes and was deliciously satisfying. I tried some of the Aubergine dish (something I would never usually go for) and was pleasantly surprised, it was similar to a Lasagne but obviously a vegetarian option and was really tasty!
For our mains we chose the Linguine Allo Scoglio (Linguine pasta with mixed seafood including mussels, prawns and squid in a light tomato sauce and white wine bisque) and a Prosciutto, Rucola e parmigiana pizza (Tomato, fior di latte mozzarella, Parma ham, fresh rocket leaves, parmesan shavings and extra virgin olive oil)
The mains were incredible and I thoroughly enjoyed the authentic Italian pizza. I was impressed at how well the seafood was cooked, the prawns in the seafood linguine were tender and juicy and the sauce tasted full of flavour and fresh.
I only ate half of the pizza to make sure I had room for dessert and I’m so glad I did as they were chocolatey heaven! We went for the chocolate brownie and tiramisu. The brownie was lovely and gooey and I think my favourite out of the two however the tiramisu was creamy and very enjoyable also.
They have recently received a Healthier Options award from Bedford Borough council which is an initiative to encourage Bedfordshire restaurants to make their menus healthier.
Everything is made to order using fresh ingredients, they have reduced their salt content, considered the portion sizes and more than halved the amount of butter used. So Riobello is perfect if you’re looking for somewhere slightly healthier to go for a meal in Bedford!
Also it would be perfect for an intimate Valentine’s Day dinner with your loved one and have put together a delicious looking menu you can view here
Thank you so much for hosting us, we had a lovely, relaxing time and thoroughly enjoyed the food and Prosecco.
I highly recommend Riobello to anyone who loves authentic Italian food!
